November 28, 2005 Council dispute costs town dearly A local authority has lost business bus from a trade union conference as a result of a dispute about activism and protests. The National Union of Journalists has confirmed that its 2006 annual delegate meeting will no longer be held in Southport after agreeing to a solidarity request from the public sector union Unison. The NUJ was due to hold the event in a venue owned by Sefton Borough Council. Unison called on the NUJ for support as part of a dispute involving two union activists who took part in a peaceful protest, in their own time, against the stock transfer of council housing in the borough. The NUJ’s national executive committee ratified the decision when it met this month. NUJ president Tim Lezard said: “This was an easy decision for us to make because as a trade union we have principles and there’s no way we would put ourselves in a position where we might have to cross a picket line. “These two trade unionists have been very badly treated and we are standing by them just as their union Unison did for our members in recent NUJ disputes over pay.” According to the Liverpool Echo, the NUJ was the second union to cancel events in the Merseyside resort. The NUJ’s decision is thought to have cost hoteliers at least £50,000 as 300 people were due to stay in Southport for three nights. A council spokesman told the Echo that the Unison officials’ conduct as employees had been unacceptable. The pair were sacked by the Council after being found guilty of gross misconduct.
