WORK to refurbish the railway ticket office at Amsterdam's Schipol airport has been presenting problems for travellers. And, the automatic ticket machines are too complicated to make the process easy. A temporary ticket office has been opened in a Portakabin outside the main exit - but the authorities are charging and extra 50 cents for tickets issued there. Even so, the queues can be long, adding at least 20 to 30 minutes to a journey time. The ticket machines accept Mastercard credit cards, but not Visa and not all Cirrus or Maestro linked debit cards appear to work either. For some, heading for destinations such as the RAI or World Trade Center railway stations on their way to friends or relatives in the Amsterdam suburbs, making the discovery that these are all listed under 'A' for Amsterdam rather than under 'R' or 'W' can add to the confusion.
